Fujitsu and BCN Port Innovation Foundation Launch Ocean Digital Twin Project at Port of Barcelona

Fujitsu and BCN Port Innovation Foundation Launch Ocean Digital Twin Project at Port of Barcelona

Barcelona, Spain — March 3, 2026: Fujitsu Spain and the BCN Port Innovation Foundation have announced a collaboration to develop a proof-of-concept ocean digital twin project at the Port of Barcelona. The initiative aims to improve monitoring of marine ecosystems and biodiversity through the use of digital technologies.

According to the announcement, the project will combine underwater drones, artificial intelligence and advanced analytics to collect detailed data about the seabed and surrounding marine environment.

Digital Twin to Support Marine Ecosystem Monitoring

The project will use underwater drones and sensing technologies to capture high-resolution data from the seabed around the port. The data will be analysed using artificial intelligence and machine learning tools to identify marine vegetation, measure biodiversity and estimate biomass linked to marine algae.

The digital twin platform will create a virtual model of the marine ecosystem surrounding the port, enabling continuous monitoring of environmental conditions. According to the announcement, the system will also help estimate blue carbon — carbon captured by marine plants and algae.

The initiative is expected to provide port authorities with a centralised digital platform to collect and analyse environmental data related to biodiversity within the port area.

    Simulation Tools for Environmental Planning

The digital twin platform will also allow authorities to simulate environmental scenarios before implementing infrastructure or conservation measures. These simulations may help port operators evaluate the potential impact of port activities or development projects on marine ecosystems.

By creating a digital representation of seabed conditions and habitat distribution, the system can assist in identifying areas that may require environmental protection or restoration. The companies said the proof-of-concept project is expected to be carried out at the Port of Barcelona during 2026.

    Digital Technologies Supporting Marine Sustainability

The project comes as governments and industry groups increase focus on protecting marine ecosystems. The European Union adopted the Nature Restoration Law in 2024, which requires member states to implement measures aimed at restoring degraded marine habitats.

According to the announcement, the digital twin platform may also support initiatives related to the “blue economy,” including marine research, environmental monitoring and scientific education.

Fujitsu provides technology and digital services globally, while the BCN Port Innovation Foundation focuses on innovation and sustainability initiatives linked to the Port of Barcelona.

    Digital Trade Outlook Analysis

Digital twin technology is increasingly being adopted across ports and logistics infrastructure as part of broader smart port initiatives. While many projects focus on cargo management and operational efficiency, the Barcelona initiative demonstrates how digital tools can also support environmental monitoring and sustainable maritime development. As ports adopt data-driven infrastructure platforms, digital twins may play a growing role in integrating logistics performance with environmental management.
