Ying Ying Tan will run both Standard Chartered’s securities services and its digital assets business, after the bank named her Global Head of Securities Services and Global Head of Digital Assets with immediate effect. She is based in Singapore and reports to Ole Matthiessen, Global Head, Transaction Services and Digital Assets.
In securities services, Tan covers custody, fund services, clearing and related infrastructure. On digital assets, she is responsible for the bank’s work across custody, tokenisation, trading, financing and ecosystem partnerships. She succeeds Margaret Harwood-Jones, who has become CEO, UK and Europe.
Tan joined Standard Chartered in 2017 and was most recently Global Head of Securities Services Product Management and chief operating officer of the business. She helped build and commercialise the bank’s digital assets custody business, and earlier held regional and global roles at Deutsche Bank in securities services, product management and transaction banking. René Michau moves to a senior advisory role and stays on the bank’s Digital Assets Steering Committee.
“Ying Ying brings a unique combination of expertise across securities services, transaction banking and digital assets,” Matthiessen said.
Digital Trade Outlook’s View: Custody Is Where Tokenisation Gets Real
Giving one executive both jobs shows Standard Chartered treats digital assets as an extension of custody, not a separate venture. Tokenised deposits and tokenised money market funds, both of which the bank already offers, need the same safekeeping, settlement and asset servicing that institutional clients buy today. With both businesses inside one Transaction Services and Digital Assets division, the same team can sell tokenised cash and tokenised securities to the same clients.
