UniCredit Invests in German Fintech VC Trade to Accelerate Digital Transformation of Debt Markets

By Digital Trade OutlookSeptember 9, 2026

UniCredit has taken a minority stake in VC Trade, a Frankfurt based fintech running one of Europe’s leading digital marketplaces for debt transactions. The deal also gives UniCredit the option to increase its stake over time, and it will support VC Trade’s growth and international expansion while strengthening UniCredit’s ability to offer clients faster, more efficient digital debt financing across Europe.

Founded in 2016, VC Trade has built itself into a key technology platform for lending markets, offering end to end digital infrastructure across the full lifecycle of debt transactions, including syndicated loans, Schuldscheine and other debt instruments. The platform already connects a broad network of banks, issuers and institutional investors across Europe, and it leads the German Schuldschein market by both volume and number of transactions. By digitising workflows and bringing participants onto one common platform, VC Trade cuts execution complexity and makes it easier for debt capital to get raised and distributed.

The deal reflects UniCredit’s continued commitment to Germany, one of its core markets, and will help VC Trade expand its services across the bank’s pan European footprint. It also builds out UniCredit’s broader digital financing ecosystem, supporting infrastructure that connects borrowers, investors and capital more effectively, part of the bank’s push to widen access to capital markets products, improve connectivity and direct capital toward productive use.

Sam Kendall, Head of Advisory & Financing Solutions at UniCredit, said: “The challenge facing European capital markets is not a shortage of capital. It is the cost of connecting capital with the companies and projects that can put it to productive use, particularly in the mid market and SME segments. Reducing this cost to serve is at the heart of our UniCredit Unlimited strategy, and VC Trade has built impressive technology that addresses the challenge directly, reducing inefficiencies in the debt market and helping participants find one another more effectively. I’m excited to work alongside them as we look to build the capital markets architecture for Europe’s future.”

Stefan Fromme, CEO of VC Trade, said: “UniCredit’s investment is an important milestone for VC Trade. We share a common vision for the future of debt markets, one built on end to end digitalisation, connectivity and artificial intelligence supporting all involved transaction partners. By combining our technology platform with UniCredit’s scale, market expertise and international reach, we are well positioned to accelerate adoption across Europe and deliver additional value to arrangers, agents, borrowers and lenders.”

The investment follows a run of recent digital moves by UniCredit, including a 16% stake in BlockInvest, a blockchain based financing technology company, the launch of DealSync, an AI powered M&A matching platform for SMEs, and the issuance of Italy’s first tokenised mini bond. Together, these form part of the bank’s broader push to modernise capital markets infrastructure through smarter processes, automation and emerging digital asset capabilities.

Digital Trade Outlook: This deal is another sign that European banks now see digital debt infrastructure as core strategy, not a side experiment. VC Trade’s lead in the Schuldschein market gives UniCredit a direct channel into digitising a debt instrument that has historically relied on manual, relationship driven processes, and paired with the bank’s other recent bets on blockchain financing and tokenised bonds, it points to a coordinated push to modernise how European debt capital actually moves
