Royal Bank of Canada has formally established Global Transaction Banking (GTB) as a single, unified business, a move that sharpens the bank’s ambitions to serve clients seamlessly across borders. Announced in Toronto on August 25, 2026, the reorganization pulls together RBC’s transaction banking capabilities from Commercial Banking, in both Canada and the U.S., and Capital Markets, placing them under one leadership team and one strategy. The goal is to connect relationship coverage, product expertise, technology and execution more tightly than before.
Sean Amato-Gauci, Group Head of Commercial Banking, and Derek Neldner, CEO and Group Head of RBC Capital Markets, will jointly lead the new business as Co-Heads of Global Transaction Banking. Together, they’re accountable for building RBC into a global transaction banking leader across every client segment. The restructuring won’t change how RBC reports its financials; results will still fall within existing business segments.
Two additional appointments round out the new leadership structure. Kartik Kaushik becomes Head of Product, Platforms and Solutions for GTB, overseeing product strategy, innovation and platform delivery. Michael Klopchic takes on Head of Client Coverage, leading sales execution and go-to-market strategy. Both report jointly to Amato-Gauci and Neldner.
At the center of GTB’s platform strategy are RBC Clear, its U.S. digital cash management platform, and RBC Edge, its Canadian counterpart. The two serve a growing base of domestic and global clients navigating their working capital needs. GTB also draws on RBC’s foreign exchange, payments, trade finance and liquidity management expertise, and the bank sees the business as key to generating the deposits that will fund its next stage of growth.
RBC already leads transaction banking in Canada, with the country’s largest wholesale deposit portfolio and its top payments franchise, and it’s gaining ground fast in the U.S. GTB is meant to build on that base and push the growth story further, on a global scale.
“Being more globally connected isn’t just about where we operate; it’s about how we bring the full strength of RBC to our clients,” said Dave McKay, President and Chief Executive Officer of RBC. “For businesses navigating a more complex economy, that means being a trusted partner who understands both local nuances and the global picture, helping them move money, manage liquidity and risk, and operate seamlessly on an international basis.”
Digital Trade Outlook: RBC’s bet here is clear: digital infrastructure, not just relationship banking, will drive the next wave of cross-border deposit growth. By anchoring GTB around RBC Clear and RBC Edge and pairing them with FX, payments and trade finance expertise, RBC is positioning itself to match fintech-native rivals on platform speed and experience, while still leaning on the scale of its existing deposit base.
